Despite the surge in popularity of the new Harley Davidson 883 Iron, and marketing power of Harley Davidson, nothing could stop a sales slide at Harley Davidson dealers around the world. Recent sales figures released in analysis by Robert W. Baird & Company, show new bike sales down 20 – 25% from the similar period last year, while used bike sales were down 5 – 10% in the period. The hot Harley Davidson 883 Iron is the only model dealers are having success with and can’t keep the model in stock, and despite the economic turmoil, continues to sell at a furious pace
Harley Davidson dealers are looking to the newest Sportster (883) to save them from a complete sales disaster this year, saying the new Harley Davidson Iron 883 is a motorcycle riders love to ride. Baird expects HD to sell 63,000 to 67,000 motorcycles in this period, down from 71,000 previous year.
Dealers are clamoring for more Harley Davidison 883 Irons, noting demand is still increasing for the popular new model, and need to take advantage of the surge in demand while they can.
Harley Davidson had shied away from discounting as a means to increase sales, as it doesn’t want to damage the brand, however, dealers continue to offer discounts. Some larger stores have been accused of doing the wrong thing by discounting to a no profit price, hurting their chances at getting through this current economic crisis.

This has proved far less successful than the popular Sportster trade in program. The trade in program helped bring in much more sales and maintained the legendary Harley Davidson loyalty and brand.
